O LE SIOSIOMAGA SOCIETY INC.

O Le Siosiomaga Society Inc is a non-governmental organisation based in Samoa which focuses on putting village communities and the environment first.

It works with the Samoan government, a number of UN agencies, SPREP, the EU, Aid agencies of various foreign governments, other environmentally active NGOs such as Friends of the Earth, the local communities and businesses. With such a wide ranging group of partners the projects it is involved with are equally diverse including consultancy work on trade liberalisation and its impact on small island developing countries, herbal medicine, community forestry, water reticulation for villages in Savaii, forest degradation and deforestation, climate change, climate inequity and injustices, biodiversity conservation, international waters, invasive species, birdlife, advocacy on globalization and its negative impacts on Samoa, disaster management, Millennium Development Goals awareness raising, Green Page sponsorships from the private sector and business community, World Environment Days activities.

Recently its Executive Director Fiu Mataese Elisara participated in the Friends of the Earth climate justice tour of Australia which received media coverage around the world.

In April O Le Siosiomaga was one of 6 Samoan NGOs to be awarded USD 5,000 each by the United Nations Development Program to help smaller projects which can have a lasting beneficial impact on the daily lives of people.

In collaboration with the Samoa Observer, O le Siosiomaga has launched the Green Page which is published in the weekly newspaper, The Sunday Samoan. The Green page is a partnership involving private sector sponsors formed to advocate policies, attitudes and methodologies that promote environmentally friendly activities.

OLSSI is attempting to acquire funding from the EU to raise awareness and encourage protection of the Samoan flying fox. It is also involved with the treatment and care of injured flying foxes that are handed in by members of the public.
